Nashville's wetlands comprise a critical network of freshwater marshes, swamps, and riparian zones distributed throughout the Nashville metropolitan area and surrounding Middle Tennessee. These ecosystems represent one of the region's most ecologically important yet historically threatened environments, supporting diverse plant and animal communities while providing essential services including water filtration, flood mitigation, and carbon sequestration. The wetlands exist primarily in association with the Cumberland River and its tributaries, as well as in isolated depressions and backwater areas throughout Davidson, Williamson, Sumner, and Wilson counties. Success will depend upon sustained commitment from municipal authorities, state regulators, non-profit organizations, and the general public to balance development pressures with ecological preservation imperatives.
